Cheryl Maas
Snowboarder Slopestyle
Cheryl Maas is one of the strongest and most predominant competitors on the Swatch TTR World Snowboard Tour. She started riding when she was just nine years old after her brother picked the sport up on skiing holidays. She rode a lot on plastic slopes back home in Holland and became sponsored at age 11. When she finally hit the real slopes at 16 she had morphed from a ‘dryslope rookie’ into a powerful future champion.
Her biggest accomplishment on the Tour to date was becoming the inaugural TTR World Tour Champion in 05/06. She finished at World No. 3 in 06/07 with all her Top 6 results falling in the each event's Top 5, including a 2nd place podium finish at the 6Star Roxy Chicken Jam Slopestyle in Kaprun. In 07/08 she again managed a Top 5 finish which was helped by her victory at the 6Star Roxy Chicken Jam in Kaprun, where she had finished second the year before.
Season 08/09 Maas did not disappoint her fans and claimed a World No. 4 place, which clearly tickled her motivation to go for the title this year. She has already claimed 2nd place at the 6Star Roxy Chicken Jam in Saalbach, Austria, stomping the best trick of the day, a lofty backside 720 tail, one of her signature tricks. When asked about her aspirations to become a double Swatch TTR Champion she said it would be “awesome” but hesitates: “There are still so many comps to be done…there are a lot of people hunting for that spot“.
Again in 09/10 Cheryl Maas proved that she is definitely a serious threat whenever there is a contest on and when she drops into the Slopestyle course you are guaranteed to see an epic run. Cheryl is a fierce competitor and vocal advocate of women’s snowboarding – making her one to watch. She posted her best result of the season in Austria at the Roxy Chicken Jam where she finished in second place. Despite striking pain form an injury, Cheryl went on to also compete at the European Open where she only places 17th. Another Top 5 finish at the Roxy Chicken Jam US put her in the final TTR Top 10 of the season. Her biggest success off the Tour was a 6th place at the Winter X-Games. The rest of the season she spent photo video shooting, among those with her sponsor Volcom, so watch out for some sick shots and video parts.
