Watanabe first gained notoriety by becoming the first American male to win an FIS World Cup event in Valle Nevado, Chile, in Sept. 2004. Traveling as a tech with the U.S. Snowboarding Team to the 2006 Olympics, Watanabe was tapped to race when Jayson Hale was injured. He earned the overall title for the Jeep King of the Mountain Series in '06 and followed up in '07 with a second overall.
